11 Creative Ways to Add Fruit & Veggies to your Diet

Most people know, as I am sure you do, that fruits and vegetables are imperative for good health. They are jam packed full of valuable nutrients including vitamins and minerals and are an amazing source of fibre – a must for a healthy gut. Yet most people still find it a challenge to get adequate amounts into their daily diet. The following tips and tricks will help you make these superfoods a regular part of your diet.

  • Get saucy with your fruit – puree berries, apples, pears or peaches for a thick sauce that tastes delicious over grilled chicken, turkey or seafood. They are also a popular addition to pancake toppings. For a fabulously healthy and tasty pancake recipe click here.
  • Add grated or chopped vegetables to meat dishes such as lasagna, hamburgers or fish patties. Zucchini, spinach, beetroot, eggplant and carrots are all great options.
  • A crowd pleaser in any household is to make fruit or vegetable kebabs – place cut fruit or vegetables onto a skewer and grill on low heat until hot and golden.
  • Blend them – mix up a breakfast smoothie with your choice of fruit and/or vegetables. Add in some ginger for that extra bit of zing. Want some more delicious, healthy drink & smoothie recipe ideas? Click here.
  • Instead of reaching for the chips and dip on movie night, choose some crunchy vegetables instead. Dip some crispy carrots, snow peas, green beans, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets or celery into some tahini or nut butter. Even better, make your own veggie dip. Try smashed avocado with a squeeze of fresh orange juice and a splash of vinegar with pepper and himalayan salt to taste.
  • Make your omelette more satisfying by stuffing it with vegetables – by filling your omelette with veggies, it will transform it into a hearty meal.
  • Bake your vegetables by adding them to muffins and cakes – zucchini and carrots are perfect vegetables for this. Bananas are also a popular option to use in baking. Click here for a scrumptious, healthy, gluten-free banana & sunflower seed muffin recipe. Yum!
  • Fruit popsicles – don’t be fooled, popsicles aren’t just for kids. Simply peel a banana and wrap it tightly with glad wrap and freeze overnight, voula! The easiest popsicle you’ll ever make. Freezing grapes and orange or mandarin segments are also great snack options, especially during the warmer months.
  • Make use of mini vegetables – these are so handy to put in a lunch box and to sit on your office desk to snack on throughout the day. Try baby carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
  • When something is out of sight, it can often be out of mind so put colourful fruit and vegetables where you can see them and have easy access. A bowl of fruit on the bench or kitchen table can be the perfect reminder.
  • Plant your own vegetables. Nothing could be more satisfying or inspiring than growing your own vegetables. You don’t need to have a lot of room, you can simply use a few pots. If gardening isn’t your thing, then take the time to visit a local farmers market. Many communities offer opportunities to buy locally sourced and seasonal food.
